The Philosophers Stone
The Philosophers Stone (2001) represents the first in a series of stone sculptures Carved out of Italian Translucent Alabaster. The crystalline translucent nature of this stone and its origin in ancient Italian riverbeds outside of Carrera to me conjure visions of alchemy. The rounded shape represents the original mandala symbol and the single cell - the origin of life. A curved division line on one side represents yin/yang or positive/negative with subtle texturing of the stone. The hole through the center draws one in to the vortex of the cosmos with the entire sculpture rotating on it's own axis. Mounted on a Nicaraguan purple heartwood base.
